Around half a century ago, during and before the Chinese Cultural Revolutionary, most Chinese people believe that they are loyal to Chairman Mao, even they are fighting with each other in massive scale. With such religious belief in their mind, hundred of thousands lives were deprived without mercy. For example in the fighting mentioned above, people used even canons and tanks. It was a civil war. Up to half a million people were killed.
Beliefs, by definition, is that you deem something is true. Certainly, if a belief is true, it is knowledge. In reality, most beliefs are not true, e.g., all kinds of religions. So it is ridiculous if somebody encourages you to have a belief rather than to learn some knowledge.
Nonetheless, one should resort to rationality, morality or laws to solve conflicts of opinions. No one has right to claim lives of other people because of a belief, no matter how saintly one deem it is. Yet the crimes committed by people with strong beliefs are often of large scale. Justice should at least be done.
In the terror cases happened here in Norway yesterday, I am actually worrying if the justice can be done. As there is no death penalty. Living standard, I heard, of Norwegian prisons is of ordinary people.
As a father of two kids, I understand how precious a kid means to the parents. And for the high teenagers, their splendid lives are just spreading before them. They, however, have hardly put a toe on them. May the peace be with the parents.
